DO SOMETHING SEEKING YOUNG LEADERS FOR SCHOLARSHIPS & GRANTS
Do Something is seeking to honor six outstanding leaders age 18 and under and three outstanding leaders age 19 to 25 who have taken action to strengthen their communities in the areas of community building, health, or the environment. Winners in the 18 and under category will receive a $5,000 scholarship and $5,000 community grant. Older winners will receive a $10,000 community grant. Applications are due by October 25, 2006. The Scary News and the Good News

At some point, every parent thinks about sending their child or children to college and how exactly to pay for it. The scary news is that it isn't going to get any easier to pay for a college education. It is going to cost more, up to a 10% increase each year. There is some relief in sight though for parents who are just not sure they can make ends meet if they are paying for a child's education. Most colleges understand that the gap between cost and ability to pay is drifting father apart. So educational institutions are coming up with more ways to help the neediest students (like Talent Search students) find the funding they need to make college more affordable.

Getting things started!

The SAT and ACT fee waivers are finally here!! If you are a junior/rising senior, you are eligible for up to two SAT fee waivers (and two SAT subject test fee waivers) as well as one ACT fee waiver. If you are unsure as to how many you are eligible for, either leave comments on this blog or call our office. We will check and let you know.
The first available test date for the SAT is October 14th and the registration deadline is September 12th. The first available test date for the ACT is October 28th and the registration deadline is September 22nd.
Also, the college application fee waivers are available. As a rising senior, you are eligible for up to four of these waivers. You must have used an SAT fee waiver first though. Community college applications do not require fees so everyone can apply to at least one CC without exhausting any fee waivers. Please let us know which schools you are applying to when you request the wavier as some colleges and universities do not accept the waivers.
Juniors don't forget to sign up for the PSAT which should be given at your school in October. This test will help you discover the areas you need to work on in order to prepare for the SAT which you will take this coming spring.
I am looking forward to working with all of you this year. School visits will begin in August or September. Be ready to work hard!

Holiday Projects

There are so many things that can be accomplished over the holidays if you are a senior. Now is a good time to complete those final college applications. Don't forget to make a copy of each application before you mail it off. December is also a great time to get prepared to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Parents and students need to gather bank records, final December pay stubs and maybe, even your taxes from last year. All of these items will be useful if you want to get a jump on completing the FAFSA by filing an estimated form. I would urge each of you to complete this application on line. This means that students and parents have to register for a PIN from the US Department of Education. It is an easy process and having a PIN makes the FAFSA process much easier. I have listed the PIN website on my links list.
The Talent Search office will be holding several Financial Aid Workshops in order to help you complete the FAFSA and to talk with you about scholarships and other forms of aid. Of course, I am always available to help parents and students complete any financial aid applications. All of our services are free so please do not pay someone to complete the FAFSA for you or to look for scholarships for you.
For junior, you may go ahead and register for a PIN as well. There are several college cost estimators out there and I encourage you and your parents to look these over.

Thanks for visiting the VTTS web log. Here you will find all you need to be successful in you academic and career pursuits. I have listed a few links for you to use and have made space for you to comment or ask questions. This blog exists so that I can help you more efficiently and effectively. Every day I will have reminders, new links, topics for discussion and other relevant educational items.
I will be posting a calendar so you can see when I will be visiting your individual school so that you can be prepared for the visit. I will also remind you of upcoming Saturday tutorials. ***Reminder: Tutorial on December 3rd!! The time will be extended so that we can celebrate our Christmas/Holiday party.*** If you have all "A's" and "B's" on your report card, please fax a copy to the office ASAP so that we can have a gift for you on the 3rd.
Before closing, I want to remind you not to slack-off during the next few weeks before the Christmas break. Some of you have SOL's that you need to take and pass. Some of you have college and scholarship applications that you need to complete. Some of you have SAT's and ACT's to study for. Some of you have exams to prepare for. ALL of you need to work hard to perform up to your potential.
